Foam Pad FAQ
It's made from high-density polyethylene, a durable and resilient type of foam. Unlike brittle Styrofoam, this material has a smooth, self-healing surface perfect for precision crafts.
This specific foam has two main benefits. First, its dense, self-healing nature allows your awl to pierce the paper cleanly and smoothly. Second, it provides a forgiving surface that protects the sharp tips of your needles, keeping them from dulling quickly. This makes it a much better long-term tool than standard craft store foam.
While Styrofoam works, it breaks down and crumbles over time, creating a mess and leaving uneven depressions. Our polyethylene pad is self-healing, meaning the holes recover after piercing. It's far more durable and will provide a consistent, smooth surface for countless projects.
The pads are both 1 inch thick. They are available in two sizes: 8" x 6" and 8" x 10".
For most projects, especially greeting cards, the 8" x 6" pad is the perfect size. If you enjoy working on larger art pieces or want more surface area to work with, the 8" x 10" pad is an excellent choice.
The pad is very low-maintenance! Simply wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth if it gets dusty. To ensure it wears evenly, you can rotate it periodically as you work on different areas.
